About the event
Steve Szell of Szephyr guitars will be teaching you the art form of carving your own custom guitar picks at Studio Lomandra. In this workshop Steve will teach you a variety of different carving techniques along with principal techniques of working with different timber types. All tools will be provided in the space along with a variety of timber pick blanks for you all to make a range of picks. Steve will prepare a set of Pick blanks cut to a variety of pick shapes to allow workshop participants with informed options based around different playing styles.

About the Facilitator
Steve Szell is a graduate architect, interior designer, furniture maker and luthier from the Morton Bay Region. Currently based in Bardon, Steves practice focuses on the upcycling of materials and challenging conceptions based around the embodied value of artefacts and the materials used to produce them. With extensive experience making furniture and instruments out of upcycled materials, Steve went on to train with master luthiers Sean & Dane Hancock receiving mentorship and guidance with his own luthier practice “Szephyr Guitars.” In recent years Steve has focused on educational programming and high engagement artefacts produced with reclaimed materials, most notably producing instruments for the music department at Ferny Grove State High School with students as part of their AIM program.
